Housing Matters #5 // The Future of Rent
Mar 7 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

As housing ownership spirals out of reach of all but the wealthiest few, more people are renting for longer. In Oxford, the average person is now spending 55% of their income on rent, that’s too expensive.

Renters include families, older people, and people with physical and mental health problems – groups that are ill-equipped to deal with the expense and precarity of the private rental market. Tellingly, a break down in a private rental agreement is now the single biggest cause of homelessness, responsible for over half of the cases in Oxford where a person has become homeless.

Rent is everyone’s problem. As the symptoms become more obvious and universally damaging there are new ideas emerging and old ideas being revived. From rent strikes to tenants unions to housing coops to mutually co-housing schemes, the time has come to start thinking about the future of rent and how we make it more affordable and more secure for everyone.

Our speakers are;

Samir Jeraj, author of The Rent Trap and Board Member of Generation Rent

Shaista Aziz, local Labour Councillor for Rose Hill & Iffley

Al Bell, Director of Citizens Advice Oxford

Tickets are free but you must register to attend.
