A Home of Her Own, women’s experiences of housing and homelssness
Oct 3 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

When the Women’s Budget Group published their A Home of Her Own, Housing & Women report in July 2019, their findings were stark. The report found housing to be unaffordable to the majority of women in every UK county.

Across England as a whole average rents take 43% of women’s median earnings aompared to 28% of men’s. Women now need over 12 times their annual salaries to be able to buy a home in England, while men need just over eight times of theirs. Women make up 60% of housing benefit claimants and so are being disproportionately affected by public spending cuts. And to cap off an lready bleak picture, the majority of statutory homeless people are women.

There is a clear need to discuss housing and homelessness as a womens issue, and to better understand the gendered nature of the problem in order to develop effective ways to support women experiencing inadequate housing or homelessness.

Join us on the 3rd October from 7pm to 8.30pm where we’ll be hearing from Dr Sara Reis, author of the A Home of Her Own report and policy officer for the Women’s Budget Group.

Sara will be joined for a panel discussion by Shaista Aziz, Councillor for Rose Hill & Iffley, Co-Vice Chair of the Fabian Women’s Network, and Co-Founder of the Labour Homelessness Campaign, and by Francesca Rogers, a local campaigner and Community Navigator for Aspire.

We will also hear from local campaigers working to improve the situation for women experiencing homelessness and rough sleeping in Oxford.

As with all events at Open House thie event is free, however we do collect donations at the end of each event to cover speaker expenses and other running costs for Open House.

If you would like your bus fare to and from Open House refunding then please just ask one of our volunteers.

Tickets are free but booking is required.
