Empty shops are everywhere in Oxford. Peppered through the centre of our city; from Cornmarket Street to Little Clarendon Street and inside both The Covered market and even the Westgate.

These voids in our city lie empty whilst people sleep rough, projects lack space and local businesses are strangled by extortionate rents.

We, a group of concerned citizens are calling an open meeting at Open House, a community project currently using an empty shop on Little Clarendon Street on Wednesday 20th March. We’ll agree an agenda together on the day and welcome all people and all ideas.

Initial ideas for discussion are;

– What exciting, local and independent businesses, projects and spaces do we as a community want to see in the centre of our city?

– What, as a community can we do to better support local and independent businesses from, loosing their premises in the first place?

– How could community projects that support people who are experiencing street homelessness use empty shops in the centre of Oxford?

– How could artists, creatives and makers who are currently squeezed out of Oxford due to high rents use empty shops?

– How might we go about reclaiming Cornmarket as a vital piece of public space and a vibrant local centre for independent businesses and other organisations

– What are the practicalities of making this happen; what do we need to do? What do we need to know? Who do we need to talk to and work with?

So if you feel as strongly about this as we do or just feel interested then come and join us to talk more and make a plan. Anyone and everyone is welcome, including kids and especially if you bring cake.
